The National Post-Intensive Care Rehabilitation Collaborative have created the ICS Framework
To address the needs of patients, the National Post-Intensive Care Rehabilitation Collaborative have created the ICS Framework to assess and guide timely rehabilitation post-ICU. This Framework was developed with the collective expertise from nursing; physiotherapy; dietetics; occupational therapy; speech and language therapy; clinical psychology; sports medicine; ear, nose and throat surgery; intensive care; neuro-intensive care; plastic surgery; respiratory medicine; rehabilitation medicine; and renal medicine. The framework makes practical recommendations for early post-intensive care rehabilitation assessment and support from the multidisciplinary team. The Collaborative has worked hard to bring together a comprehensive pathway for the rehabilitation of patients in and leaving intensive care and the framework includes a new Post ICU Presentation Screening (PICUPS) tool and rehabilitation prescription that can be applied to Trusts straight away.
Link to the framework is here: https://bit.ly/ICSRehab
Due the rapid nature of producing this document in the COVID-19 pandemic, it is likely that iterations will be required to refine the content of the framework and the associated, hence feedback is essential and encouraged.
With nutrition playing a key part in recovery for many, this new exciting framework is of relevance to BAPEN members. We would encourage you to discuss and share this guidance with colleagues, representative organisations, your networks and throughout appropriate channels to ensure that care post-ICU supports our patients to the standards required to optimise recovery and improve quality of life.

NEW - Calling all Dietitians - please take part in the PENG Dietetic Outcomes Toolkit ('DOT') survey - deadline 13th November 2017
Following the successful launch of the PENG Dietetic Outcomes Toolkit (DOT) last year the outcomes working group are seeking your views on DOT and we would be grateful if you would take some time to complete the DOT survey which can be found at this link: https://qmu.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/peng-survey-dietetic-outcomes-toolkit-dot
This is a repeat of a similar survey which was distributed earlier this year but even if you completed that survey we are interested to hear your views again. Following the completion of this survey the intention is to review, revise and update DOT and so it is important that we get as much feedback as possible. Please therefore share the link to other dietitians who may not have receive this communication. The survey should take around 20 minutes to complete but it does not have to be completed all at the same time – you can save the survey and return to it later. The deadline for completing the survey is midnight on 13th November so there is plenty of time to share your views and experiences.
Many thanks in advance for taking the time to complete the survey.

Benchmark Statement for Dietetics - consultation now open - opportunity to respond by 31st August
The BDA and the QAA have been developing revised Subject Benchmark Statement for Dietetics. These Subject Benchmark Statements set out what graduates in particular subjects are expected to know, do and understand at the end of their programme of study. They describe the nature of study and the academic standards expected of graduates in specific subject areas and in respect of particular qualifications. They are used as reference points in the design, delivery and review of academic programmes but do not represent a national curriculum in a subject or prescribe set approaches to teaching, learning or assessment. Instead, they allow for flexibility and innovation in programme design within a framework agreed by the subject community. If you would like to comment on these please take time to complete the attached survey here http://www.qaa.ac.uk/newsroom/consultation-on-the-draft-revised-version-of-dietetics#.WVUSPOvyvRb which is open until 31st August.

Would you be interested in becoming a PENG research and audit mentor?
Please get in touch with Jacklyn Jones (Research lead for the PENG Committee) at jjones@qmu.ac.uk and you can receive more information about the role. If you would be interested in having a mentor or a point of contact to help answer questions about research and audit then please also get in touch.
You may recall that the PENG committee recently surveyed the PENG membership about their involvement in research and audit activities. As part of this survey members were asked about the support they felt they needed to engage more fully in research and audit. The survey identified several areas of research and audit where members would like more training. Some of these areas such as identifying funding sources and writing for publication will be included in the PENG autumn meeting in 2015. However in addition to formal training many PENG members stated that they would find it beneficial to have an individual point of contact to ask specific questions about the research and audit process. In view of this the PENG committee are aiming to set up a mentoring system to support PENG members in developing their research and audit skills. We are therefore seeking potential mentors to help with this process.

East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust has worked in collaboration with Health Innovations to produce a Red Mat which stays on the tables of those patients who are at risk of malnutrition or dehydration, to remind staff and inform relatives not to remove any food or drink without informing nursing staff. At present most Trusts use Red Trays, but these are only there during mealtimes, whilst these mats are there 24 hours per day.
